SoCal rain isn’t constant—but it can be intense
Southern California often gets long dry stretches… then storms hit with major rainfall over a short period. A big driver of West Coast wet-season precipitation is atmospheric rivers, which can bring heavy rain and flooding impacts when conditions line up.
That’s why roof drainage is one of the most important (and most ignored) parts of roof performance in our region.
What fails first in heavy rain? Usually drainage, not shingles
In real-world storm calls, leaks often start because:
- Gutters are clogged and water backs up under the edge
- Downspouts can’t move water fast enough
- Roof drains are blocked
- Low-slope roofs have ponding water that finds a seam or penetration
- Debris piles up in valleys and “dead zones”
Low-slope (flat) roofs: drainage is everything
If you have a low-slope roof (common on additions, apartments, and commercial buildings), watch for:
- Ponding water that sits 48+ hours after a storm
- Soft spots or bubbling
- Cracked sealant at penetrations
- Debris rings where water regularly collects
In many cases, drainage corrections (tapered solutions, scupper improvements, or drain repairs) are needed—not just patching the leak.
The SoCal roof drainage tune-up (do this before storm season)
1) Clear roof debris
- Valleys, behind chimneys, around skylights, at parapets
2) Clean gutters + check slope
- Standing water in the gutter after a rinse test is a red flag
3) Confirm downspouts discharge correctly
- Make sure water isn’t dumping against stucco, windows, or the foundation
4) Check drains/scuppers (for flat roofs)
- Leaves + granules love to clog these first
5) Look inside
- Stains, musty smells, or “mystery humidity” can indicate slow intrusion even without a visible drip
“It only leaks when it rains hard”
That phrase almost always points to one of these:
- Overflow/backup at the edge (gutter issue)
- Valley overload (debris issue)
- Drain/scupper restriction (flat-roof issue)
- Wind-driven rain at transitions (detail issue)
If you want peace of mind before the next big storm, schedule a roof inspection and drainage check. It’s usually far cheaper to clear and correct drainage now than to repair ceilings, insulation, and framing later.
